Full of Your Mercy

The earth, O LORD, is full of Your mercy; teach me Your statutes.(Psalm 119:64)

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! This phrase from Psalm 119:64 jumped out at me recently: “The earth…is full of Your mercy…” It’s stayed with me. I marvel at how true this is!

Even though things are not the way God originally intended them to be on this earth…even though this world is sin-corrupted and the creation was subjected to futility (Romans 8:19-22) at the Fall in the Garden of Eden…even though there’s death and suffering… Even with all this, the mercies of God are boundless in how He cares for people! Join me in thinking about His mercies that fill the earth!

Isn’t it a mercy that we get to sleep?

That our bodies can heal?

Just think of what a mercy it is that our bodies work so well. We have elbows to allow our arms to flex into valuable positions. Our fingers, arms, and legs are the proper length! Our ears, eyes, nose, and mouth are well placed. Our most vital organs are the most well-protected in our abdominal structure.

I find it amazing, while man’s creations are always up for tweaking, the human body is created ideally to do what we need to get done! I don’t ever hear anyone talking about how they wish their liver was placed a little differently, or how they wish they had twelve toes, instead of ten. 😉

We don’t typically have to even give a thought to breathing, blinking, swallowing, or basic movement. It’s automatic.

What about the soil? It wants to grow food (it will!)…yet there is also a winter rest so we don’t have to work trying to keep up with the growth year-round.

And the weeds that grow with such enthusiasm all over the place? Most of them are medicinal, beneficial to the human body.

The rain, sun, and clouds are generally in a beautiful balance to provide warmth, shade, and proper moisture. The trees act as giant, gentle fans, circulating the air and making us cooler.

God created music and color, adding great delight to what we see and hear.

He made us to remember things, yet some unpleasant memories also, happily, fade away.

The gift of family is a huge mercy…to have human relationships who share love, care for each other, and provide trust and faithfulness is such a comfort. Isn’t it a mercy that children can be born to renew the earth and provide such hope and joy for the previous generations?

And, while they are learning to walk, children don’t have as far to fall, are well-padded and flexible…and they’ll even get another set of teeth! 😀

These are just a few of the mercies of God that literally FILL the earth!

To those who believe in Jesus, His spiritual mercies are even far greater. He has pardoned our sin, through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, and rescued us from a merely temporal life on the earth that goes by like a vapor! He has given us eternal life and His mercies are new every morning!

He has also given us instruction in His Word to live by, which is where the second half of Psalm 119:64 comes in – “…teach me Your statutes.” When our eyes are opened to His mercy, we’re going to want to hear His Word! And, in His mercy, He will faithfully teach and guide us.

“Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassion fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.

“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!”

The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.”

(Lamentations 3:22-26)

  3. A great reminder of all that which GOD has done for His creatures! How amazing is His love and generosity towards us. A perfect earth was created, “The Mighty One, GOD the LORD, has spoken and called the earth from the rising of the sun to its going down. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, GOD will shine forth.” Ps 50:1-2 “Offer to GOD thanksgiving,” vs 14 and “Whoever offers praise glorifies Me; and to him who orders his conduct aright I will show the salvation of GOD.” vs 23
Maggie, such a blessing to share in awe, faith and admiration of the wonderous Father GOD!!!
